Chapter Nine

Reluctant to leave the bed, nevertheless Roman dragged himself from the nest he was sharing with his breed partner and his…possible breedmate and went to his own room to shower. He’d been looking forward to today for a while, and now he didn’t want to leave the bed. He smiled grimly as he rinsed his body and stared down at his flaccid cock. It hadn’t been like that ten minutes ago when he’d been lying next to the sexiest woman he’d ever met.

That was the trouble. He hadn’t expected her to bowl him over like that.

He’d lain still, her breath heating his skin. His arm was curled protectively around her, and her hair tickled his chin. Her curls had sprung up overnight. Roman smiled. They’d given Jess no time to dry her hair or add the gunk she’d unpacked into his bedroom. She’d most likely be mad when she woke, but he wouldn’t be there to see it.

She’d be with Hunter. And that was something else. Why wasn’t he protective of her and jealous of him? Sure, a breed partner, but he hardly knew the guy.

Last night he’d still borne a few pale pink marks, signaling a weakness beneath the skin. He’d promised Roman that when Jess left for work, he’d spend the day shifted. The bullet holes had been precisely placed to do the most damage to his body, but the upper shot had missed his heart. The lower wounds had damaged his stomach, gut, liver, and kidneys, but they’d be more or less healed by now.

Whoever had shot him knew what they were doing.

Hunter treated them as if they meant nothing. Since shape-shifters rarely bore scars for long, there was no knowing how many he’d had in his time. Wildcats wasn’t the best place to dodge bullets.

While Wildcats, Inc. was one of the foremost agencies in the country, it hadn’t always been so. Taking shape-shifters who didn’t have a home, or didn’t fit in their communities, it had built itself into a formidable unit of shape-shifters and badass humans. The Grid’s political party sometimes accused shifters of forming their own private army, but Wildcats didn’t work that way.

How the fuck had he arrived at this point? With a potential human breedmate? Years ago he’d sworn he wouldn’t accept a human breedmate. It was wrong, his logical self had concluded. What right did he have to take something he wasn’t entitled to? Human women had been made potential breedmates by an accidental spillage of an experimental chemical into the water supply. That had been enough, and it was still creating trouble between humans and shape-shifters. Was it worth it? Lovers, sure, but breedmates?

That was before Jess. She’d stormed into his life, overturning all his carefully worked-through attitudes and logical opinions. Now he didn’t know what to think, so he was going to do something he hadn’t done in years. He was going with the flow.

Even more important that his work remained orderly and successful.

Knowing he was spending most of the day with Louis, he dressed even more carefully than usual.
